Major report on Tullamore water 'imminent'

25th June 2019

A MAJOR water and sewerage report for Tullamore is imminent, Cllr Declan Harvey was assured last week.

The Tullamore Area Drainage Plan is a “long time going on” the Fianna Fail councillor told the June meeting of the County Council.

Cllr Harvey said he is especially interested in the report as it pertains to the “northside” of Tullamore in relation to water and sewerage.

“We were supposed to have it some months ago and we still haven't had any word,” said Cllr Harvey.

Cllr Harvey has previously expressed concern about lime levels in the water in the area, the quality of the water itself, and the frequent overflows of raw sewage onto the footpath and road close to the Grand Canal at Callery Street.

Tom Shanahan, director of service, told him the report was imminent and Anna Marie Delaney, chief executive, said the council was working with Irish Water on the matter.

A report provided to councillors at the meeting said contractors are now on site in Clonaslee where upgrades are going to be carried out for the Tullamore and Birr water supply schemes.

In addition, a trial well is being sunk in Arden where a supplementary reservoir is being built.

The aim of the €21.5 million project is to provide “safe and secure water supply” to 18,000 residents, according to the council.
